In this great future,
you can't forget your past...
The 2009 Hourglass Yearbook
Wilmington High School
159 Church Street
Wilmington, MA 01 887
As you head towards graduation, our
country is in the midst of one of the greatest
economic downturns it has experienced
in decades. Things are changing at such a
rapid pace, and it seems almost impossible
for many people to survive financially.
According to an old English proverb,
"Necessity is the mother of invention".
Fortunately, you have been the consumers
during much of this change, and out of
necessity have developed the ability interact
with your environment in successful ways. As your teachers and
families look towards your next steps, I am comforted by the fact that
someone within your ranks could hold the solution to new economic
prosperity. Our future depends on your creativity, persistence and
desire to succeed. We count on you to navigate the new, high tech,
high speed economy.
This year you have also witnessed history with the election of this
nation's first African American President. Incredibly, this process has
taken our country almost two-hundred years to complete. I wonder if
Abraham Lincoln realized that his historic Emancipation Proclamation
would lead this great country to many firsts in the quest to make all
men and women equal. You have worked hard and must realize
that the greater challenges lie ahead. We have laid out the tools
before you throughout your school career. No time in history is more
important that the future of our world. Will you be a problem solver?
Will you prosper beyond all of our dreams? Only time will tell. Ilook
forward to the results of your hard work and wish you all the best. Be
thoughtful. Take the time to see the little things and most of all be
there for others! Good luck!

The Hourglass Staff is proud to dedicate
Wilmington High School's 2009 Yearbook to
Mr. Fred Shine
Wilmington High School Class of 1967
During September 2008, Mr. Shine was good enough to visit with a few of the
English and Social Studies classes here at Wilmington High School. Whether
reading The Things They Carried (the 2009 Wilmington Reads book) or learning
about the war in their history textbooks, Wilmington students were given a first-
hand account of Mr. Shine's experiences during the late 1960s. In addition to
his own, Mr. Shine shared stories of his high school classmates — ^John A. Rich,
John J. Fullerton Jr., Robert W. Parent, and Richard W. Welch — all who lost
their lives in Vietnam.
In addition to his day spent speaking with students, Mr. Shine has been
involved in a number events with the WHS student body, including a football
game tribute to his good friend Jack Fullerton back in November and a guest
appearance for the Wilmington Reads program in March.
Mr. Shine, thank you so much for sharing your stories with us all. This dedication
is but a small token of our appreciation.
Senior Class History
The Class of 2009 experienced an adventure through its four years
at Wilmington High School. With different class officers elected
each year along with four different class advisors, each year
consisted of various fundraisers, activities, and events. The Class
of 2009 achieved great success and made grand contributions
during their time at Wilmington High School.
Although freshman year was a huge transition to a completely
new surrounding, the Class of 2009 entered the high school with
a bang. Class elections initiated the year, with President Corinne
Sartoris, Vice President Kenny Vassallo, Treasurer Liz Crupi, and
Secretary Allison Yee. While the nation faced devastating effects
from Hurricane Katrina, numerous students aided recovering
families in New Orleans through mission trips and fundraisers.
On a different note. New England was overjoyed with the
Patriot's victory against the Eagles in the Super Bowl. As the year
progressed, the Class of 2009 witnessed their first Spirit Week,
with Hawaiian Day as the Class Day theme. The Class of 2009
was excited with all of the new experiences at the high school.
With the help of the class advisors, Mrs. Martell and Mrs. Bavuso,
the officers thought of great ideas for fundraisers that would kick
off their journey through high school. Towards the end of the
year, the class participated in planning the traditional Spring Fling,
which was a great hit. As the Class of 2009 became more than
comfortable in the school, it was no doubt that they were going to
achieve great things and accomplish many goals.
The Class of 2009 had a very productive sophomore year.
Despite the dreaded sophomore research paper, everyone
enjoyed the year. Newly elected President Joe Cerbone proved to
be a beneficial addition to the existing officers. Fundraisers began
with the selling of glow sticks during the spring fling dance and
continued for many other events. Hacky sacks made a come back
as the "in" activity to play after lunch in the courtyard. Moreover,
many bought the Class of 2009 t-shirt to help support upcoming
events. During the spring of 2007, students experienced
Wilmington High School's very first Culture Festival hosted by
the Foreign Language Club. As the year wound down, the class
officers began recruiting class representatives to help with the
major events for junior and senior year.
Junior year was truly exciting and tremendously hectic for the
Class of 2009. As the United States economy struggled with a
recession, the class was busy with the SATs and ACTs, college
explorations, and scholarship applications. However, everyone
took a break to celebrate the Red Sox win the 2007 World Series
against the Rockies and the Celtic's 1 7"' NBA Championship
against the Lakers. Even Wilmington High School's own varsity
soccer and basketball teams made it into the state tournaments.
Furthermore, everyone was ecstatic to watch Wilmington's own
Varsity Boys Hockey team compete in the state championship
at the TD Banknorth Garden. During spirit week, the class
enjoyed their original Class Day theme of Wacky Tacky Day.
Welcoming the newly elected Vice President Nick Monteforte
and Treasurer Lee Joan Villafuerte into the team. President Joe
Cerbone and Secretary Allison Yee began to prepare an exciting
Junior year, working to plan an unforgettable prom. With Ms.
Bavuso's retirement from the previous year, Ms. Smith joined Mrs.
Martell as the other class advisor. Together, the team of officers
and advisors worked diligently with the class representatives
to plan numerous fundraisers in addition to selling glow sticks,
hacky sacks, and class t-shirts. The cookie-dough fundraiser
was a delicious success that satisfied everyone. Bake sales and
Fuddruckers nights became fundraising trademarks for the Class of
2009. The year culminated to a beautiful and memorable Junior
Prom at the Tewksbury Country Club. Aside from the snow on
this late March day, the Junior Prom was a success due to the
tremendous help from the prom committee. In lieu of prom
favors, the Class of 2009 donated the funds to the Justin O'Neil
Scholarship. With their last year of high school approaching, the
Class of 2009 enjoyed their last summer vacation while in high
The Class of 2009 certainly cherished their 2008-2009 year
as seniors at Wilmington High School. As the school began to
prepare for the accreditation process, the Class of 2009 worked
hard to finish their last year of studies including the newly
introduced VHS classes. The English classes were busy studying
a novel related to the Vietnam War as the Moving Wall visited
Wilmington for several days. Wilmington High School's Class of
2009 had the unique opportunity to partake in a tailgate party
hosted by Vietnam War veteran Fred Shine as a reunion for his
own Class of 1 967. While President Joe Cerbone, Vice President
Nick Monteforte, Treasurer Lee Joan Villafuerte, and Secretary
Allison Yee were re-elected from the previous year, Mrs. Santana
made a great addition as advisor to the Class of 2009 with Mrs.
Martell. The year moved quickly starting with spirit week and the
pep rally in eady fall. Then the Class of 2009 prepared for the
Prom Fashion Show with immense assistance from Val Crampton
and Ericka Beraldi. Continuing previous fundraisers, the class sold
cookie dough once again, dined at Fuddruckers, and managed
several bake sales. Following the t-shirt design contest, in which
senior Joe Cettler won first place, members of the Class of 2009
purchased their own fierce wildcat senior shirt. Additional
successful fundraisers — Royal Dynasty, Senior vs. Staff volleyball
and basketball games, and the Senior/Parent Spaghetti Dinner —
tremendously helped with the expenses for the year. The Senior
Prom at Danversport Yacht Club on May 1" was definitely a night
that everyone will remember. Other senior events such as the
banquet, lock-in, and the Senior Cookout finale brought the Class
of 2009 together for the last time. The people of Wilmington
also joined hands as one community to fight against cancer in the
town's first annual Relay for Life event of the American Cancer
Society. Outside the walls of Wilmington High School, digital
cable became a requirement nationwide while Barrack Obama
became the first African American president of the United States.
It was a truly memorable year and certainly one the Class of 2009
will never forget.
The Class of 2009 has had a great impact on Wilmington
High School with their tremendous success and achievements
throughout their four years. Every student has transformed from
the experience they have encountered during these years. As
each student embarks into the world, each will remember the
incredible adventure they shared throughout the four years at
Wilmington High School.

On Friday, March 28, 2008, the Class of 2009 held

joining Prom King Ryan Breslin and
Queen Danielle Underwood on the
Junior Prom Court were Ryan Parker,
Lee Joan Villafuerte, Jimmy DiNuccio,
Corinne Sartoris, Ryan Townsend, Vycky

ith an elegant ballroom,
an excellent DJ and a
beautiful dusting of
freshly fallen snow, the Tewksbury
Country Club created the perfect
setting for this incredible evening.
In lieu of the traditional prom
favors, a donation was made to
the Justin A. O'Neii Scholarship
Fund on behalf of the class. At
the end of the night, the Junior
Prom Court was named.
With a successful prom behind
them, the Class of 2009 had
enjoyed an unforgettable
evening, fueling the excitement
for the Senior Prom to come.

Editor-in-Chief Arnica Di Mambro and

Spirit Week began in grand
fashion this year. On the
first day, students dressed
according to an assigned class
theme. The freshmen showed
up as their favorite superheroes,
the sophomores looked to the
Cartoon Network for
ideas, the juniors went
to work, and the seniors
dressed In any type of
costume they pleased.

someone find Teletubbies,

In keeping with the tradition set over the years, students once

of WHS were buzzing

was well represented but some
people built up the courage to
wear Yankee apparel. In

Once again, the titles of Mr. and Ms. WHS were up for grabs,
and this year's competition was one of the best yet!
The winners of the 2009 Mr. and Ms. WHS
Competition were Stephanie Weymouth
and Kevin Flanagan.
Held November 13, 2008,
the Mr. and Ms. WHS
contestants based on a variety
of criteria, including a talent
segment, a display of school
spirit, a skit, and an interview
with the hosts — Shannon
Jones and Cole Carter.
All competing in hopes
of being crowned this
year's Mr. or Ms. WHS,
each contestant worked
hard to provide a night of laugh«
and entertainment with a variety]
of routines including stand-up
comedy, parodies of movies
and television shows, and even
a display of video game talent.
Although everyone competing
put forth tremendous effort,
only two people could win the
titles of Mr. and Ms. WHS. In
the end, senior Kevin Flanagan

After many months of

Anything Goes put on a superb

with rehearsals from there. With
many late hours of practice, the
cast persevered and had a lot
of energy to put on the 1 920s/

couldn't have been done without
the great help of Mr. Jason

nights of the show were January

Once again, it was
season for the varsity
football team, this year fronted
by captains Steve Stewart,
Mike Manganelli, Anthony
Nihan, and Chris Thibault.
The Wildcats did not get a
share of the league title this
year, but they finished the
season 9-2 for the third straight
year. The Wildcats were led
on offense by senior captain
quarterback Steve Stewart and
junior running back Evan Butters.
On defense, the Wildcats were
outstanding with senior captain
Chris Thibault leading a strong
group effort. It was this tough
defense that gave the Cats their
identity all season. The team
had many come-from-behind
wins, truly demonstrating how
much heart the team had.
However, the most exciting
moment of the season was
when the Cats scored on
Hamilton-Wenham in the final
minute to erase a one-point
deficit and to secure the win.
With their winning record, it
was truly a memorable season
for the Wildcats.

on your life's journey. You taught me some things as well. Especially! NOT to
judge so quickly. People/things aren't always what they seem.
You have a huge heart, full of compassion & empathy. I admire how you
gently encourage those not-so-daring to reach for the stars. You once said
you didn't understand how people can just give up" as the beauty in this
life is there's always another chance to "do it over." I hope you'll let that
fuel your fire for success when life gets overwhelming.
Please know, I will ALWAYS be here for you, no matter haw far or close
you need me to be, because you are just ThIAT deep inside my heart.
I love you! No matter what! (Even if you need me to drive a half hour in a
major snowstorm for TtiE BEST lemonade. .lol} Spread your wings & fly... All my love, hAom
You have grown into such a special person. Because of your endless drive & self -discipline, you have put yourself
in a position to succeed. Your future holds endless possibilities. You have brought me a tremendous amount of
love & joy. I am so very proud of you. I love you. Dad
